It is widely agreed by most gem scholars that the tradition of birthstones
originated from the Breastplate of Aaron. This ceremonial religious
garment was set with twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes
of Israel and also corresponding with the twelve signs of the zodiac
and the twelve months of the year.
In ancient times gemstones were not always classified by mineral
species as they are today creating some debate about which gemstones
were set in the Breastplate of Aaron and why. Because of this, different
cultures around the world have developed different birth stone lists.
Most people don't realize there is more than one way to choose a
birthstone, and the standard list of acceptable birthstones is just
one of the many guides that today's educated consumer can use when
making a birthstone choice. How about a birthstone that corresponds
with either your DAY
or HOUR
of birth, or a birthstone that corresponds with the SEASON
you were born? People of Christian beliefs may choose a birthstone
that corresponds with one of The
